Q&A: What are the specific health benefits of owning a dog?

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Question by Dellajoy: What are the specific health benefits of owning a dog?
Some guy wrote a letter to the editor complaining about people who pay so much attention to their dogs and spend money on them when there are charities that need help. Some people have written in to tell him that while they own dogs they also contribute to charities, etc and how dare he tell them what their hobbies should be. I’d like to write a short response of my own mentioning health benefits since no one has touched on that subject yet.

There is an issue of getting a varied diet, which becomes difficult if you leave out important “building blocks” by omitting fat, carbs .. or protein.

If your parents are in charge of of your meals, becoming a vegetarian is not really fair on them, because it takes a lot of thought and extra work, both shopping but also in preparing dubble meals.

People eat meat to get protein, and the main reason for poor health in vegetarians, is those, who are not getting enough protein.

Beans, lentils and such have protein – especially soy beans provide an excellent source of protein. However, those foods do not really taste very good on their own. So you not only have to make sure you get enough of them in your diet – you also have to learn to like them, or learn how to cook them, so they taste good.

I used to be a vegetarian, and even if I was very conscious about getting my proteins, I still got sick. I started gaining weight, really fast, and no matter what I did!!
Over about a year my eyesight got worse, my consentration got really, really bad and I got extremely tired from hardly any effort.
I kept thinking I was doing the right thing by eating vegetarian, because I thought it was healthy. Luckily my mum forced me to go see a doctor, and my condition was discovered. I have a cronic metabolic disorder, which I have to fight for the rest of my life.

So before altering your diet, make sure you know what you’re doing, research thoroughly and consult a doctor before, during and especially if you detect anything out of the ordinary!!

What are the health benefits of giving up soda?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Question by Brandon: What are the health benefits of giving up soda?
Lately, I’ve converted to drinking mostly water and/or juice, and I was wondering how this could benefit me health-wise.

I drink a little bit of soda still, but not much.

Best answer:

Answer by Matt K
Well, caffeine is addictive, so drinking lots of soda on a regular basis can actually be addicting. Also, it eats at the enamel on your teeth, causing cavities. Obviously soda also has lots of calories…and the diet ones have lots of unnatural chemicals.

Q&A: What are the health benefits to becoming vegan?

Question by Lucy<3: What are the health benefits to becoming vegan?
Only people that have experience with veganism to answer. What are the health benefits to becoming vegan. Please include: mental, emotional, physical, sexual, etc.
The reason I am asking is because I want everyone with experience with veganism to show everybody that it really is a good thing to become vegan. BTW I am a Vegan.

Best answer:

Answer by The Worm
As for mental/emotional, I think I would definitely consider it positive. You could know that you are not causing any suffering, etc. and should be much happier with yourself. Physically, it would depend on how well you manage your diet. It can have health benefits, such as lower heart disease, lower cholesterol, less chemicals ingested from the meats, and stuff like that. But if you do it wrong, it could cause health problems. You have to be careful to be sure and get all of your vitamins and such, or it could be a bad thing. As for sexual, it is often hard to find means of a birth control system in the way of veganism, considering almost all medicines are required to be tested on animals and most pills have a form of animal products in them. But if you are able to control your diet that much, your sex drive shouldn’t be too hard to control.

Best answer:

Well some say that apple cider vinegar taken each day some how helps you lose weight (When I go to Greenlife Grocery the apple cider tablets are in the weight loss section too), but Iv’e recently read several weight loss and nutrition books and they said it isn’t true.

Question by Yates: What are the health benefits of eating peanut butter?
I’m looking for sources, excluding Wikipedia, that describe the health benefits of eating peanut butter. It would be nice if the facts were specific to crunchy peanut butter, but it isn’t necessary. Peanut butter benefits compared to other popular foods would be awesome. Thanks!

What are the health benefits of raw garlic?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

I’ve heard garlic (raw) is a natural antibiotic. What are other health benefits of eating raw garlic and also how much should I eat daily to be able to get the benefits?

Best answer:

Answer by Weise Ente
It’s not. Garlic has no antibacterial activity in vivo.

Edit: Allicin, a compound in garlic that has antibacterial activity, requires uM concentrations to kill anything.

You aren’t going to get that from eating it.
