Question by Crash Test Chloe: What type of preventative health screening should I request from my new doctor?
I’m scheduled to see a new doctor and I haven’t been to a doctor or specialist for any health care in over a year. I’m 23 years old and wonder what type of preventative tests or referrals to specialists should I ask about? i.e. blood work, physical, etc..

Should I major in public health/health sciences at a state university or biology at a liberal arts?

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Question by wearasmile2: Should I major in public health/health sciences at a state university or biology at a liberal arts?
I am interested in studying epidemiology in graduate school and a lot of the schools, especially the state universities that I am interested in has a major in public health/community health/health sciences/statistics. Should I consider a mathematical or health sciences major, or will it make me more well rounded to study biology in a liberal arts college, since biology is more of an “academic major”. Any information on epidemiology would be helpful!

Stay away from biology unless you are either willing to work for peanuts the rest of your life, or are planning to be a Dr. or Vet.

All the biologists that work with me make 2/3 or less than what I make.

Do some research on what careers pay well and go that direction. Check with your councilor or your contacts at whatever university/college(s) that you are looking at attending. Remember this because this decision will be permanent, and you will remember me telling you so if you go the wrong direction. Good luck on this journey.

What health concerns should one be worried about when traveling to Hawaii?

Question by Nic: What health concerns should one be worried about when traveling to Hawaii?
We would not have any kind health insurance to cover any thing that would arise.

The work we will be doing will be strictly volunteer.

Are you traveling from the continental US? If so, then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I’ve visited Hawaii several times and never had to worry about my health.

The tourist industry is huge, and there are lots of military personnel traveling back and forth so most diseases or illnesses on islands or mainland travel back and forth. You won’t be exposed to anything new.

Q&A: What health care problem should I address in a statistics assignment?

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Question by The Don: What health care problem should I address in a statistics assignment?
I have to make a power point about a health care problem for a statistics class and include a frequency table, which means I need actual numbers, not percentages as most statistic information is portrayed. Does anyone know what would be a good health-related topic where I could find actual numbers easily? Or any good websites for health-related data?

The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation is a research think tank. They have all kinds of references to interesting research around health care and health reform. With a little digging, you may be able to contact some of the researchers.

WebMD is another useful source for anything and everything health care.
