It's okay to shred them if you are not claiming any medical on your income tax records. If you do, then keep them along with your receipts of what you wrote off on medical with that years income tax for 7 years.~~

You do NOT have to be a full or part time or any kind of student under the new Obama law passed last year. However, your parents must agree to this and contact their insurer to add you to their policy. And that is good until you are 26 and only if you do not have group health insurance at work. You can get married and not live at home and keep the insurance. Here is the website to explain it. Keep in mind that insurance companies usually only add or drop people during their open enrollment period which could be in January or at the policy renewal date only.

Your parents have to have coverage through their employer, and be willing to add you back to their policy during the next open enrollment, and pay for it.

You need to talk to mom and dad about this. They don't HAVE to do it, if they don't want to.

You don't need to be a student. You just need to not have coverage at your employment available to you (that rule goes away in 2014), you need to be under 26 years old and they need to want to put you on. They don't have to and just because they can doesn't mean you should go on their plan.

You need to talk to your parents and ask them about putting you back on their plan. Most companies only allow changes to health insurance during the open enrollment period held once a year. Health insurance is not free just because you are a student. The cost will be deducted from your parents paycheck if they agree to add you back on their plan. If the coverage is expensive you might offer to pay for it so that it is not a hardship for your parents.

The insured parent must ask to have you covered by their insurance. The insurance company will probably require proof that your are a full time student. The University Registrar can provide a letter (they do it all the time).

We just went through this with our 20 year old daughter.

~~With the new reform it does not make any difference if you are a student or not, you are eligible to stay on their insurance with their permission until the age of 26 or you are employed by a business who offers a group plan.

Which ever parent covers you would need to speak to their HR dept or manager, They may have to wait until open enrollment to add you if you have not been on it. Their office can explain how it will work.~~

The only way that you get on their plan is to ask them to put you on their plan. You cannot put yourself on it. You have to have them do it for you.

You ask your parent (the primary insured party). It's up to them whether to carry you on the insurance or not.
